Origin of Name and Stories

Kobori Enshu 小堀遠州 named this chaire Katada because its original owner lived in a place called Katada. Enshu together with the priest Kogetsu Sogan 江月宗玩wrote the poems associated with the chaire on a scroll, which has since become an accompanying document for the chaire. A detailed history of this chaire is not known. It is written in the Yukimagusa 雪間草 that Naruse Hayatonosho of Inuyama Castle purchased this chaire for 6,000 ryo.

Physical Description

The Katada Katatsuki has a much more gentle form than Hatsuhana or Matsuya Katatsuki. This softer shape sets it apart from chaire of the kansaku classification, the oldest style of Chinese chaire. This chaire is made from very high quality clay and is light in the hand.
